Wenonah History
The present Wenonah School building opened on January 5, 1976, with Mr.Rodney Bradt as principal. This new school was built on the grounds of the old Wenonah Elementary, which originally housed the Basic City High School before becoming Wenonah Elementary. Students kept daily tabs on the construction of their new school while in attendance in the oldschool, and during Christmas break of 1975/76, principal Rodney Bradt, Wenonah teachers and parent volunteers helped move the contents of the old school into the new building. When students returned from break, they began classes in their new school. Demolition of the old building then took place, making way for the existing parking lot in the front of the school, which overlooks downtown Waynesboro.
Wenonah houses 16 classrooms grouped in pods of 4, with wet areas and rest rooms in each pod. The pods are separated by common areas: the first floor common area houses the multi-purpose room, music room, teachers' lounge, guidance office, one second grade classroom and the main office. The second floor common area houses the media/library center, special education classroom, the Literacy Center, a speech classroom, two fifth grade classrooms, two fourth grade classrooms, two third grade, and two second grade classrooms, art and the Computer Lab. The cafeteria, kitchen are located on the lower level. Wenonah was built with the open concept popular at the time, without walls or doors separating the classrooms from the central hallway. Glass walls with doors were installed in 1997, creating the more traditional enclosed classrooms that we enjoy today.
